Scouting Report: De’Aaron Fox

Scouting Reports

De’Aaron Fox was the 5th pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, and ranked as my #2 PG and overall my 4th ranked player. Here is his scouting report:

Name: De’Aaron Fox

Height/Weight: 6’3 / 170

Wingspan/ standing reach: 6’6.5 / 8’4

Hand size: 8.5

Position: PG

College/ country: Kentucky

Tools: Athleticism, slashing, floor general

Pros:

  • Outstanding point guard skills
  • Excellent in transition
  • Elite finisher at the rim
  • Tons of driving moves- dangerous eurostep
  • Good perimeter defender despite lack of strong frame- scrappy defender that will guard you the distance of the court- high motor
  • Very capable of leading an uptempo team
  • Super quick- hard for defenders to recover on drives
  • Sharp Basketball IQ
  • Great court vision
  • Very high character

Cons:

  • Incredibly skinny. Must add weight- strong finisher at the rim despite lack of weight
  • Jump shot is a work in progress
  • Average wingspan and height
  • Defensive discipline + intensity can come and go

Overall: Fox is an exceptional player. He runs a pro style offense that uses a lot of P&R/ pick ‘n’ pop, and he runs both of those incredibly well (his pick ‘n’ pop is ahead of his P&R). He is an elite finisher when attacking the rim, which is remarkable considering his relatively tiny frame would suggest otherwise. While he is skinny and does not possess a great wingspan, he is strong and has excellent instincts on both ends of the ball. However, he is still young and has time to put on necessary weight that will help him take the next step as an NBA player. Like most young guys, his defense isn’t always great, as he has lapses and gambles at times. However, he works through screens well and is an irritant to ball handlers. He has elite basketball IQ, is a transition monster due to his speed and finishing abilities, and can already run an NBA offense. Fox’s career banks on his jumper- if his jumper does not develop, he may be an NBA backup at best. If it becomes enough of a threat to close out on, he will be an NBA starter. He will benefit right away by being drafted to a team with shooters, as his drive and kick is a perfect fit in the NBA.
