Marcus Bagley Scouting Report

Scouting Reports

Marcus Bagley was a hyped prospect heading into Arizona, following in the footsteps of his older brother, #2 overall pick Marvin Bagley. However, Bagley only played 17 games across 3 years at Arizona State. Across those 17 games, Bagley averaged 10.9 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.2 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.4 BPG, and 1.6 TOPG on splits of 38/35/69. Below is his full scouting report:

Name: Marcus Bagley

Height/Weight: 6’8/220

Wingspan/ standing reach: N/A

Hand size: N/A

Position: Wing

Pre-draft team: Arizona State

Tools: Shooting

Pros:

  • Good shooter, can be lethal out of PnP
  • Good athlete
  • Good rebounder
  • High release with clean form

Cons:

  • Defensive awareness
  • Must tighten handle
  • Has to add strength
  • Doesn’t get to the rim much
  • Barely played in college across 3 years

Summary:

Marcus Bagley’s tape is hard to get a grasp on because of his lack of in-game reps and tape. Because of this, intel will play a key role in grasping Bagley’s NBA potential and identifying any obstacles to utilizing his ideal wing size and traits.

At the NBA Draft Combine, he participated in Excel’s Pro Day and shot the lights out as part of one of the biggest and most attended pro days of the week in front of several executives and scouts. Bagley only played 5 games across the last 2 seasons, and only 17 games in college basketball across 3 years, so this will open up questions for teams ahead of the draft and undrafted free agency.

The hope with Bagley is that while he lacks ball-skills to be more than an off-ball threat, maybe he can become a pure 3&D wing at 6’8 with good athleticism and the ability to crash the glass. With great size, a high release, and a smooth shooting motion, the combination of athleticism, rebounding, shooting, and defensive potential will be difficult to turn down on a two-way contract to develop in the G League in hopes of graduating from the two-way and becoming an end-of-bench wing that can be a high-level shooter with defensive traits to contribute in a positive manner.

Similar to: Svi Mykhailiuk, Louis King, Kevin Knox

Projected draft range: 50-undrafted

Expected role: Shooter with minor secondary defensive skills

Unplayable if: Jump shot isn’t falling, intel doesn’t check out, and defensive awareness burns him more than it helps him.

Exceeds expectations if: Shooting translates at a high level, and he can at least be neutral defensively.
