8:50 Anthony Black forces Luka turnover on post up leading to Suggs fastbreak score
A bit sloppy to start the first quarter. Luka had 2 early turnovers and then Kyrie had a long pass go out of bounds.
8:17 Jalen Suggs wraparound floater; haven’t seen him take that so confidently before
7:46 Luka steal leading to Grant Williams layup
7:25 Suggs fake leading to tipped pass assist to Franz at the rim
6:32 Suggs 3 over great Green closeout
6:05 Paolo drive and kick to Anthony Black 3 over collapsed Mavs D
5:47 1Q Luka great assist to corner Grant Williams 3 with multiple Magic defenders on Luka
Paolo has gotten to the rim at ease
2:11 Cole Anthony assist down low to Moe Wagner
First quarter notes: Paolo Banchero got wherever he wanted at ease. Mavs jump shooting was strong, as well as capitalizing on mistakes. Nice quarter by Jalen Suggs showing significantly more confidence as a scorer than the last meeting. Magic ability to exploit holes near the rim on cuts remains difficult to stop. Strong minutes from Anthony Black playing good defense on Luka Doncic as well as shooting well. Mavs should be concerned Franz Wagner was mostly invisible in the first. Tim Hardaway continues to thrive in the first halves of just about every game this season
2nd quarter opens with more Magic drive & kicks leading to Mavs miscommunication and defensive breakdowns leading to an early timeout
Mavs have hit a wall 4 minutes into the second quarter. The tired legs have been obvious, missing several jumpers off the short end of the rim.
7:04 2Q Hardy bumps off Cole Anthony for floater foul
Tim Hardaway continues to be lost on rotations throughout the first half, particularly on perimeter rotations. He got burned on a Moe Wagner 3 by not communicating with Lively on a switch, and often found his back to the ball trying to find the ball on rotations.
4:35 Cole Anthony chasedown block, 4:25 Banchero turnaround J on the ensuing possession
Powell is being left out to dry at the rim with poor perimeter defense both on-ball and off-ball
Derrick Jones has been consistently good defensively. Got a nice block from behind on Anthony Black’s dunk end of the 2nd quarter
4:42 3Q Cole Anthony D
2:48 Green transition score
Josh Green has had a confident 3rd quarter and it’s not a coincidence that they came back during his 3rd quarter minutes
Lively got his fifth foul at 11:33 4Q.. Minimal drop-off and Mavs turned stingy by packing the paint and forcing Orlando to settle for jump shots, which is not the identity of the Magic offense.
11:23 Luka assist to Grant Williams and-1
11:00 Cole shake n bake turnaround jumper
7:16 Luka forces almost TO? Unsure how that was recorded but had a PERFECT post steal on Paolo Banchero
Anthony Black has won the post matchup against Luka Doncic almost 100% of the time. However, Kyrie had his way against Black when they went 1-on-1.
Orlando struggled with turnovers too much at inopportune times. They simply haven’t countered Dallas’ adjustments. One example is how the Mavs started packing the paint. Orlando looked shocked and settled for the shots Dallas wanted them to take.
Once Paolo Banchero got his 5th foul, Dallas did not hesitate to attack in quick offense, being able to force him to decide if he wanted to risk his 6th foul when often struggling to get into position defensively.
3:34 Powell block
Moe Wagner had another meaningful game as a backup big. His chemistry with his brother Franz has made the team better, but he does so much dirty work on both ends at the rim, and is comfortable stepping out to the 3 point line. His role as a backup big is crucial to the Magic, especially with Wendell Carter out.
Dallas had a dominant 2nd half. Hardaway improved defensively, and the Mavs did a good job sealing off the paint, and overall holding Orlando off the scoreboard with just 36 second half points for Orlando.
Offensively, Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic found their fit as playmakers together without over-passing. The way they played off each other without interfering in terms of the natural of the offense was obvious, and both were unafraid to take big shots to close the game out. This was their best fourth quarter since the trade sent Kyrie over to Dallas.
