2017 Scouting Report: OG Anunoby

Scouting Reports

OG Anunoby is one of the most intriguing prospects in the draft, and his stock would have been drastically impacted had he played the full 2016-17 season. Anunoby is one of the more unique players in this class, thanks to his super long arms and strong NBA body.

OG Anunoby is 6’8 and weighs 232 pounds to go along with a 7’2 wingspan and 8’11.5 standing reach. Needless to say, length is a main tool for him, along with defensive upside.

Strengths:

  • Possesses some ability to handle the ball. Anunoby can drive to the basket well. He can make the offense flow with the ball in his hands.
  • Anunoby’s frame allows for supreme defensive upside
  • Defensive skillset is strong- he can defend the P&R well
  • Excellent feel for the game. Doesn’t stand around/always moves, seems to find a way to be at the right place.
  • Explosive athlete makes him a lob threat
  • High energy player- Anunoby has an excellent motor.

Weaknesses:

  • 3 point shot is a work in progress- poor shooting numbers with flaws in jump shot form. Additionally, his FT% is low, which does not help his shot translate well.
  • Anunoby averaged more turnovers than assists per game. He is still growing as a playmaker.
  • Injury- Anunoby had a season ending knee injury and may miss much of the 2017-18 season.

Overall: Anunoby is a unique athlete. You don’t find many players with his size, length, strength, explosiveness, and quickness blend very often. He is a natural scorer that is most effective scoring inside the 3 point line, and can be a lob threat. He can play anywhere from the 2 to the 4 thanks to his uniqueness combined with natural scoring abilities. He also is an excellent finisher at the rim, and is very capable of playing above the rim. His defense shows tremendous upside, as he uses his quick feet and long arms, and has good anticipation. Anunoby almost never takes a play off, and should be helpful immediately. His jump shot must improve for him to reach his ceiling. In college, teams generally sagged off of him at the 3 point line. He has a high floor thanks to previously covered points, but his star potential is dictated by his jump shot growth. Anunoby may fall on draft night due to missing most of the 2017 portion of the 2016-17 season, but whoever grabs him may be looking at an all defense caliber player with tremendous offensive upside. I see a lot of Jimmy Butler and current Andre Iguodala in him, especially if his jumper improves. Don’t forget, Jimmy was very limited offensively in his first couple of seasons.

NBA comparison: Andre Iguodala

Projected draft range: 10-24- progress of knee injury to NBA teams dictates where OG lands. He has the potential to be a major sleeper candidate.
