Overall:
Desmond Bane is the best shooter in the draft, along with one of the most cerebral, hard-working, and durable players in the class. Having only missed one practice in his four years at TCU, Bane has the intangibles every team dreams of.
On the court, Bane is a modern role player that will contribute immediately to winning basketball. An elite shooter from anywhere on the court with limitless range, Bane’s main selling point will be his jump shot. The peripherals he brings to the table are what pushes him into the first round. His intelligence with the ball in his hands is unmatched for a non-point guard in this class, indicated by his almost 2:1 assist:turnover ratio. While he lacks advanced ball-handling moves to break his defender down, he can capably run a pick & roll and manipulate defenders to find open teammates.
Defensively, while Bane has a neutral wingspan, which hurts his ability to close out, his intelligence, athleticism, and strength often outweigh his short arms. He beats players to their spot, reads screens well, and has strong general instincts. Athletically, Bane recorded a 40+ inch vertical at the Pro Basketball Combine in 2019 and has a great ability to recover quickly. With the right team, Bane should be at least a neutral defender.
